Sexpert Spotlight Series with Miss Ruby
How did you get started as a sex toy reviewer?
I went on a sex toy shopping spree in late 2014. Unfortunately, I’d inadvertently filled my shopping cart up with toys that weren’t particularly body safe or powerful. I had no idea that some materials were toxic, and the reviews on the store product pages had been so positive. I was so disappointed when I used them. I felt totally duped and wished I’d read independent reviews.
It was around that time that I discovered that a few people ran independent sex toy review blogs (and I mean a few – there weren’t many reviewers back then). I was inspired to add my voice. With the help of my tech-savvy partner, I set up Miss Ruby Reviews and launched it at the start of 2015.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I love the excuse to get my hands on so many quality pleasure products; since 2015, hundreds of toys have passed my desk.
I love being a part of a global community and – as one of the older bloggers on the block – being able to give advice to new bloggers.
I also love having a platform to influence the industry. Bloggers have a surprising amount of sway – I’ve led or joined critiques of some pretty toxic company practices, and they’ve resulted in real change.
What message do you feel needs to be shared with the world about pleasure products and those that use them?
That pleasure products can (and do) play a really great role in healthy relationships. Within relationships, sex toys aren’t about replacing or criticizing partners. Instead, they’re a tool to enhance existing pleasure and intimacy with your partner. They’ve been amazing in my marriage
Best advice for someone wanting to introduce toys into their relationship?
Don’t surprise your partner(s) with a sex toy, especially if you’ve never used one together before. Sex toy preferences are incredibly unique – even the colour of a sex toy could be a deciding factor. Instead, discuss it openly and shop online together. Every step of the way should be a joint adventure. And if your partner isn’t interested in sex toys, don’t push it. Sex toys are only fun and appropriate if both partners are equally enthusiastic!
What is missing from the pleasure product industry that you would love to see?
Body safe products (such a silicone) tend to be more expensive, so there’s still an issue with accessibility. I would love to see better access. If silicone sex toys were more affordable, more people would be able to avoid materials like jelly.
What is a little known fact about you?
When I started Miss Ruby Reviews, I was doing a Master’s Degree but really had no clue where I was going to go professionally. I loved blogging and I hated my Master’s program; my blog definitely played a role in my decision to leave my program. I never regretted that decision. Over the years, running Miss Ruby Reviews gave me such great experiences with writing, business emails, and social media that I decided to go into communications.
If you could move to a fictitious town from a favorite TV show or book, where would that be and why?
That’s easy – Hobbiton! Good food, gardening, and living simply. I think I’m a country girl at heart!
What is your favorite pleasure product of all time?
The We-Vibe Tango, Magic Wand Rechargeable, and Doxie Die Cast are up there in terms of quality, luxury features, and strength. But at the end of the day, I usually turn to the FemmeFunn Ultra Bullet – its battery life is incredible and it has the perfect rumble for me. I sincerely hope it never gets discontinued!
